About a year ago, I took a weekend trip to visit some of the small towns and train yards near Mount Shasta. Northern California has more than it’s fair share of both nice small towns and well stocked train yards. This area of the country had train service to serve the logging and mining industries, particularly during the early 20th century, and some of that heritage remains today. I’d like to share some of the pictures from that trip.
Weaverville, CA – A pleasant small town in the mountains. I suspect most of us don’t have enough money to stay there for more than a day or two though. I personally was only there for about 2.5 hours.
Dunsmuir, CA – I liked this town; it seemed like a sleepy place now that once was not.
Dunsmuir, CA – The train yard security man asked me politely to stop trespassing, at which point I realized riding dirt bikes has made me so numbed to trespassing on rail road property that I hadn’t even noticed I was doing it.
Dunsmuir, CA – A real working motel featuring caboose rooms with a view.
McCloud, CA – The rail line going south east out of McCloud takes one to the train bridge from Stand By Me.
McCloud, CA – Caboose in rail yard.
